Basically 'dump chaff' would replace the 'dump cargo' routine + be generally availible.

Each item would be given a chaff factor and when they are dumped they will increase the chance of a pin being blocked. There will be an option to dump cargo and flee as well as dump chaff and flee. A large 100% frieghter dumping all its cargo will most likley always esacpe a pin.

The position number for debris will also be given to the attacker if cargo is dropped and if the attacking ship. If the is no space battle and the ship has cargo space any none chaff will be scooped based on item security.

Btw if there is any solid reasons why you hate the idea pls say as well. I like it to be pointed out if things are stupid.

Will this include boarding actions?

When I last underwent militiary service, chaff was used to blind missiles and radar. How do you equate this with preventing pinning especially if a line of sight exists? Are you assuming that electronic tracking equipment is always in use when pinning ships?

Considering the distances involved I think it is reasonable to assume that there is very little eyball contact in space battles and that in general some form of electronic surveillance is used. As such there is no reason it cannot be interferred with.

Wouldn't jammers have some sort of similar effect, though?

Not really. Jammers block internal scans of the position. They have never stopped the position being scanned in the first place, which is what is needed for pinning.

Surely the distances are small for pinning. You have to get up close to block the ISR field that allows orbital ring movement. A fast ship simply (and literally) run rings around the smaller ship, preventing the proper buildup of a stable ISR field (which is why an emergency jump does damage - the field isn't properly formed).

Chaff is just the throwing of large objects (like modules and tanks) out of the cargo hold airlock to throw the pin ship away for a few seconds. As the pin ship has to navigate through the equivalent of an asteroid field to keep up with the slower ship and maintain the pin on the ISR field, the slower ship has a chance to get the field stable and do an ISR-jump before the pin ship can get back into range to disrupt the field.

I think dump-chaff is a good idea, since it also allows for specialist cargo to be researched to help escapes.

Do people routinely run their freighters with 'dump cargo' enabled?

I for one do. It is the only way to give a freighter a slim chance to escape an attack, and in my opinion should be the default setting instead of "Flee"!

I have voted for the proposed change. Andy does have a point in that we still need to discuss how boarding actions are affected. But I see the neccessity to improve the current procedure.
Clay
I agree with the Frabster. And I also run some ships with Dump Cargo - but it does depend where I am and what I am carrying.
