Hi all As a new(ish) player I've noticed the lack of affiliation info on the website. There is also a similar lack on here. Would it be possible for the admins to start a section of the forums with all the affiliation contact details and a little blurb about each aff. Many new players must end up on these forums looking for affiliation information, it might be an idea to try and give it too them. Cheers Matt M

Hi Matt, Have you tried the Phoenix links page? Here's a list I have from the Sub Space Static (SSS is the Phoenix newsletter of sorts): AFT - http://www.rbwilliams.freeserve.co.uk/aft/mainmenu.html BHD - http://www.confederacy.org.uk CIA - http://www.confederacy.org.uk CNF - http://www.kurik.co.uk/cnf COH - http://users.cybercity.dk/~dsl100261/coh/ DEN - http://www.bondrjr.net/dewiek DNA - http://members.optusnet.com.au/madmaxcc/ DOM - http://www.pvv.org/~kennetso/dominion FCN - http://home.btconnect.com/Howells/fcn.htm FEL - http://www.felini.org/ FET - http://www.frontierexplorationandtrade.com FGZ - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/verisimilitude/aegis HVE - http://peter.norberg-gbg.com/hive/ IMP - http://www.stellarempire.net/ RIP - http://www.geocities.com/rip_secure/RIP_1.html SMS - http://www.stellarmining.com/ WMB - http://phoenix.specht.co.uk Any missing can post here I presume? (I'm currently working on the new DEN website so an up-to-date list would be useful for me too :) Although I should probably point out that this sort of question is probably better posted to the mailing list: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KJC-Phoenix/ Enjoy...

...perhaps each affiliation could post a short paragraph of who/what they are and pin this thread at least until such a time as an official version is added to the main site?

The Flagritz website is actually now: http://flagritz.cjb.net

DEN (67) - Dewiek Elder Nation: The Dewiek race evolved from a wolf-like canine species whose origins have long since been lost. The Dewiek are one of the oldest races in the Peripheries and were travelling the stars when most other sentient species were still banging rocks together. The DEN represents the entire Dewiek race and is therefore a balanced and varied affiliation with a place for everyone.

The correct address for the IMP website is:- http://www.geocities.com/imperialstellarpatrol/ The one shown is an old one and is not updated. Geoff

While there is a (so far unfinished) Affiliations section on the KJC website, I think Matt has a point here. We need to look after new players even better - I get the feeling it must be pretty hard for newbies to get a grip of the rules and at the same time get a feeling for the rules and roleplaying background. I think it would be good to add a fifth section to this Phoenix forum, in addition to Rules, Bugs, General, forum rules: 'Affiliations'. This is not thought to supercede the KJC site, but it would give affiliations an opportunity to put some recruitment stuff online and is better than SSS for this purpose because players have all affiliations at their fingertips and can compare things, as opposed to being presented one single "affiliation of the week" in some depth. Thinking about it, it might make sense to put a full 'New Players' section into this forum, but it would require strict moderation to keep it brief and informative (i.e. worth reading).

On joining the KJC-Phoenix mailing list a welcome message is sent out (or if it doesn't currently do so it can be set to do it). This welcome message could be used to give a brief overview / introduction and could include an FAQ.

I had noticed the websites. But some of the links are dead (specifically FET) and it is a bit much to ask some one to trawl though all the websites. I was thinking a section on here, could be maintained and kept up to date more easily and be a bit more digestible than 10+ websites. Just my tuppence. It isn't much of a problem for me. I was in FET when I played last time (just before Phoenix started) and I'm going back there... Once I can get out of this DTR starport I seem to be in. And I'm also down as a DTR ship too. Worrying.

Hi Matt, sorry to see an active player go - and defecting to the FET at that!! Tsk Tsk ;-) I guess you're at my starbase, Porta Capella in Yank. That's an open starbase and you have nothing to fear even if you change your flags to FET. You may also want to sell your kastorian delicacies here before they decay (hint, hint). All you have to do is to issue the Leave Affiliation order, which will revert you to IND. From there you can join the FET. It is not possible to switch affiliations right away, you always have to go via IND.
matt | |||
I've already taken off and switched to IND. Thanks for the reassurance. I'd talked to Romanov on the IRC channel and he said that providing I just took off and then switched to IND I'd be ok. I may be tempted to come back and flog you the delicacies. What kind of price are you paying for them? Cheers Matt

It's a good idea, with a well made case. I'd second (third?) this.

My one concern would be that it would dilute the main focus for this forum - improving (and increasing the understanding of) the game mechanics and rules - especially when there are other places where this might be more appropriate. As has been said, KJC's site does have a spot for this, so why not just get each aff to submit their material and have it posted there? So long as it doesn't change every few days, that shouldn't be a problem... Or even have the chance to do this within the game, like the aff startup message? Then the site can probably reflect the latest recruitment message like we get for the markets? Dan

Okay suggestions are: 1) Have an aff/new player section on this forum. 2) Include aff summaries on the KJC-Phoenix welcome message. 3) Put aff summaries on the Phoenix website. Problems are: 1) Detracts from the main purpose/focus of this forum. 2) More work for the spam-busting KJC-Phoenix admins (plus not everyone may want to join the group?) 3) More work for David/Mica to update the site and/or create some kind of automated update system (linked to online editor maybe, only allows certain politicals to update info?) Other suggestions I just thought of: 4) Have an "independent" affiliation website that everyone can contribute to. This is also more work for whoever takes it on, but will be a volunteer anyway not someone voted in to do it by everyone else. 5) Have an open files folder on the KJC-Phoenix groups page for affs to post summaries. Any more ideas?

this wouldn't be a problem Dan

I've done some tidying of the email list's filespace, and included a folder for this. For now we'll keep the filespace as moderator upload only, but feel free to send submissions directly to me, Phil or Ewan. To keep things even (and to avoid us running out of room) please keep these text , .rtf or html only and no longer than two sides of A4 for both the description and for the recruitment blurb. These are meant to be summaries of each aff in one place - if new players want to see more about your aff they can follow the link to your website you'll probably put in there ![]() ![]() ![]() Dan (edit: removed word doc and added .rtf and html to formats - we need to make sure everybody can read them and there are a few people who hate microsoft enough to not have word on their computer)
Sjaak | |||
StarOffice/OpenOffice, which is available on Windows, Linux etc is good enough to handle most word/excel documents. Its a big download, but its free. Also, if you want that people can read your documents, make sure that you give people an possibility to read your text without shelling out lots of money to buy an product like MS-Office, which isn't cheap.
nortonweb | |||
You mean there are some people who pay for Office???
Sjaak | |||
Looking at the microsoft turnover and lofty profit margin (some 90% on MS-Office and MS-Windows) there are indeed people paying for it. Maybe we need to get the non-payers switch to OpenOffice.
Steve-Law | |||
Surely its the *payers* that you need to switch ;)
nortonweb | |||
Just get the payers to switch to the "Open Source" versions of MS-Word found on all peer-to-peer systems :-)

How? Surely this forum is a place where new players will come to learn the ropes. It is linked off the Phoenix website. Most people coming from that site may assume that this is the official forum. Surely a section for new players would be a really sensible idea. >2) More work for the spam-busting KJC-Phoenix admins (plus not everyone may want to join the group?) Well they may not want to join the group, but I can't see it being a bad thing. There is a lack of information collated in one place on the various affs. The more places this info is the better. As for time, I can't see it taking them that long to do it. >3) More work for David/Mica to update the site and/or create some kind of >automated update system (linked to online editor maybe, only allows certain >politicals to update info?) Unless things have changed radically since I last layed Phoenix isn't that Mica's job? Surely it is in his best interest to make sure that the offical Phoenix pages have such useful information on them. Not sure about David, does he get paid full-time or not? If he does then he comments for Mica apply to him too. >Other suggestions I just thought of: >4) Have an "independent" affiliation website that everyone can contribute to. This is also more work for whoever takes it on, but will be a volunteer anyway not someone voted in to do it by everyone else. Good idea, however a few problems. 1) who will do it? 2) where will the site be hosted? Are they expected to pay for hosting of their own back pocket? 3) It is another website to go to. My orignal suggestion was to have the list on here, a place that new players are going to come to fairly early on. Mainly becuase it is linked from the official KJC website. I could see any website set up for that purpose becoming out of date very quickly and little used into the bargain. >5) Have an open files folder on the KJC-Phoenix groups page for affs to post >summaries. Sounds like a good idea to me. >Any more ideas? Honestly no! Cheers, Matt

How about a new 'Forum' on this site's entry page that say 'New Players Go here'. The content of that 'Forum' is a link to the Yahoo group. When i joined Phoenix it took me a while to find out about the Yahoo group then even longer to find out about the 'Files' section... GTDoug.

Personally I see no problem with having a New Player or General Information section on this forum (a part of which will be about Affiliations). I'm not a huge fan of forums in general to be perfectly honest but they seem to be increasingly popular, and have their uses (infinitely superior to yahoogroups' search engine for one!). The main problem really is that we are probably going to have to choose one place to point new players, or those seeking information to avoid a repetition (to save the same people having to manage the same information in several different places). Where do we make it? My preference is still some kind of file repository (like Dan has set up for affiliations) for information, but I can see the advantages of having it here. One advantage of a New Player section on here is that it will be somewhere that Mica and David do not *need* to read every post. They may chose to of course, and I'm sure they'll skim through it fairly regularly, but I'm sure that the mods and other players can manage most of the questions that will come up. That frees up the rest of the forum for the more technical questions/bug reports/announcements/develpment discussions etc. without distracting M&D from developing/running the game and distracting the new players with an arcane debate on missile targetting versus colour of socks or something equally deep they just don't need to worry about at this stage (don't want to scare them off do we ![]()
