I've notice recently that some systems appear to have different scans than they used to, not with regards to planets but to which public systems they are connected to. For example in today's turns Solo appears to be connected T.Tauri directly:
I'm pretty sure before it was only 3 because of the jump via venice, Just wondering if this is now correct because it really messes up the links on JumpMap ¬_¬

Jump links reported on a Scan are dependant on your political knowledge - could that be why? Mark

T.Tauri is a public system, not one that requires any knowleadge, My point is i've never seen a link to it before from solo (just from venice so same distance total)

I think this means 3 jumps via Venice. There is no direct link that I know of. Nik

It has always been a 3 jump. Whether this is Solo -3- T.Tauri or Solo -2- Venice -1- T.Tauri is actually immaterial for the jump as it does not pass through the intervening system. The map is only used for convenience of layout and stellar cartography, i.e. in most circumstances it is easier to research a direct -3- link than a -2-X-1- link.

I believe there are a number of instances around Solo and there used to be one in the Capellan periphery where a jump connection was indicated that runs through an intermediate system. Most were tidied up as it is plainly superfluous data, at least in public systems. In Phoenix, jump connections are stored with each system (I think). We had a discussion on wether jump links should become political information, like Items or Systems. In that case the 3-jump connection between Solo and T.tauri would make sense because it is not dependent on the existence of Venice as an intermediate system. You cannot even be sure how many 3- or 4-jump-connections go through intermediate systems that you don't (yet) know about. (My two-dimensional map model with straight links and no crossovers doesn't work out around T.tauri in one or two cases so in order to keep the map "clean" I help myself by including a virtual intermediate system - who knows...) PS Mica, if you're indicating that T.tauri is a 3-jump from Solo independently of its 1-link to Venice which in turn in 2 from Solo then you just scrapped my map model in the border region between the Capellan, Darkfold and Detinus peripheries...

I realise that it makes no different for jumps if it's 3 from solo or 2 then 1 via venice, however as it's on the solo system scan, which it never used to be, it means my map now shows it as a direct link (well technically it shows t.tarui to abyss because my automatic link generation is borked ¬_¬ but thats another story) I've already had to move things around once to deal with the magically appearing yank-kastor 4 length link (which used to be 2-2 via solo). I don't really mind which it ends up being, but when the scan printout changes it's a pain ![]()

Been using that route for years, if the jumps between two systems add up to 4 or less you can get there, regardless of any intervening systems you might by-pass on the way. Thought this was common knowledge ![]() Geoff

No i realise it makes no difference in game, you could always jump the whole way at distance 3. Its just the system scan never used to show it and now it does, it's just annoying cause it means all my maps are now wrong ![]() Also I can't find a single way to layout the map with a direct link there, been playing with it for hours, you see jumpmap updates automatically when certain ships of mine do system scans to try and keep it uptodate. Gonna have to hardcode the link out now, can't find a nice way to lay the map out with that direct link ¬_¬

There IS a way to make the connections without overlapping - it just REALLY messes with the ingrained feel that existing maps have prejudiced us towards... ![]() ...along the lines of turning the Peripheries inside out ![]() Cheers, Rich Fanning aka ![]() Lord Lawrence Scrimm CIA Intelligence Director

Unless you can come up with a 3D map I suspect that the problem does not have a solution. Since most people know the jump rules the old maps are acceptable. In BSE I noticed that most system scans were showing all possible jumps but they went down at the time of the conversion. Nice to hear that they are bobbing up again. ![]()

You know, a couple of years back on the first or second Blackpool BSE meet, Thomas was going but I was not so I gave him a copy of the DTR starmap I had made to ask Mica about something. My map was different from most maps available at the time because I had taken great care to show relative jump distances, and also to nicely fit it all into a 2d grid. Mica's reaction was something along the lines of "Gee, that's a nice map. Much better than the ragtag sketch I have in my office. Never thought it would work out so nicely". ![]() |
