On battle reports weapon fire is reported like this (from an old'ish battle report):
OK, we have number and type of weapon, number of hits achieved, damage not stopped by defences [total damage from hits achieved] and a percentage. What is this percentage please? I've tried to work it out what it means a few times but with no sensible outcome.

I'm not figuring it out either. BTW was it supposed to make 133 dmg. Or was it on a already damaged ship? Could you say the shield and armour depth?

I'm happy in my understanding of everything else besides the %age at the end of the line. I can't say the shield depth and armour as I was firing at someone else and you're not told that information at the start of the battle, only the end.

It's not the understanding it's the value

It was the actual percentage chance of each missile hitting, after absolutely every was considered. As it is simply a percentage that each weapon hits, a few weapons may mean that none hit even though it stated an 85% accuracy. Basically % hits tends to accuracy as number of shots tend to infinity.

I thought that to hit a target with a weapon you have to get less than a number (lets call it the "to hit" number) from the total of 3 random numbers between 1 & 6 (otherwise known as 3D6 to all us old roleplayers). The "to hit" value is accuracy + targ bonus + Target Silhouette - Target dodge and some other stuff. This is actually the closest I got to working out what the %age was but in this respect 18 or more = 100%, 13.5 = 75% and 9 = 50% but that's just not true as 3D6 has more than a 75% chance of producing a number less than 13.5. If the number really the proper calculated %age chance of each weapon making a hit or just a direct conversion of a number in the range 3 to 18 to a %age?

A 3d6 distribution plots out as a Bell curve - an 84% is probably closer to a 16- on a 3d6 than the 14-15 of a linerar distribution. Cheers, Rich Fanning aka ![]() Lord Lawrence Scrimm CIA Director of Regional Operations |
