When building ships, do people usually want to use the best items available or stick to the items specified on the blueprint? I personally want to build ships using the best equipment I have available and think I may have fallen foul of the "use best" option being what it is instead of there being a "stick to blueprint" option. If people usually want to use the best items this should be the "default" operation of the order rather than having to be manually ticked for every ship build order. Can I modify the orders.cfg so that "use best" is checked by default? When building a ship, you cannot start construction until the hulls and armour are available. I've never had all the internal items available but expect that if they were they'd be removed from the starbase at that time. Shortages only appear to be detailed once at the start of the ship building process, therefore to check what I need to provide I have to go back to the first maintenance report after the build ship order was issued. Why aren't shortages listed weekly as part of the ship building messages in maintenance? I've made the missing items available during the build period but the items still don't appear to have been removed and the ship is still shown as having a shortage in the shipyard report. Why aren't item shortages checked for weekly and once all items are available, taken from the starbase?

Absolutely! The best items should alwas be used. What's the point otherwise.

It's not a question of 'always', its a question of default. I agree with Lee that 'use best' will be the normal case. 'Stick to blueprint' will be used less, perhaps when building ships for sale, etc. rob

Just to attempt to cover one of Lee's other points - the shipbuilding process should check for item shortages a second time as it finishes the vessel and remove anything that has become available in the intervening period at that time. I'm not sure I've seen this in practice, however. Mikhail M - SMS

It does check again at the end of the process and remove the items (just finished a ship falling into this sort of scenario this week) but if a ship takes 10 weeks to build and the items become available week 3 why are they not checked for and removed at the next maintenance day. That way the status of the ship building operation could change from being short to being OK.

I agree with Lee's point here, it should be updated weekly so you can tell if you need to build other items quickly. It would be better if all blueprints had mki items set and used the best available then no matter what mark of item you had in the starbase the report would tell you it was ok to build the ship. I don't agree. A number of people have argued that they will sometimes want to build 'best available', and at other times build with lower-mk items. For simplicity, this has been reduced to a choice between 'best' and 'as blueprint' - the first post in this thread argues that 'best' should be the default, not that it should be the only option. On a related note, can anyone remember the justification for not allowing items to be used when they're a lower mk than that specified in the blueprint? rob

To allow people to specifically choose a "hard floor" for the minimum mark of items/hulls/armour that gets used in ship building with that bluprint - people might then choose to never build a specific ship with Mk 1 hulls, for example. With only a "default/Use best" toggle, it's the easiest way to allow people to do that Dan |
