From time to time it happens that I get a printout for a ship as though it has been in a battle, but there was no battle. Apparently this can happen on any position. Recent example:

The subject line reads: "Phoenix Battle: DTR Algonquin (56312) [1048]"
The actual turn is essentially a position update. The ship is accumulating TUs in a safe orbit and neither this ship nor any other position in the vicinity scanned an enemy position.
There is no separate battle printout either, as nothing has actually happened.

Under which circumstances are those non-battle turns generated?

I have seen this a few times. It occurs (I believe) when there is a battle in the location of the position but the position is not actually involved in the battle - not even as a bystander.

Sorry Mica, but it seems that's not correct. A few months back there was one such "battle printout" generated in the orbit of Kastor (Kastor system).
Only one ship out of several in a squadron, and not even the lead ship, received the printout. The ships were all mine. The only other positions to be seen were KST (who confirm that there was no battle on that day) and a FEL base.
