I have not been able to find the order for changing a GP's spread....how do you do it?

I don't think you do.

If i recall the combat is always fought with the defenders spread, and in the case of ground parties this is selected as the most effective one for the defender. Static positions such as outposts have a change spread command.
Gandolph
the change spread order is missing from the ground party orders.

BUT its not always the case you will fight under the defenders spread, it depends on what type of attack you do.

the way i did it last time, IE change my gp spread, was via a little fiddle until they get this order added as its vital your GP is set correctly. Absolutely VITAL.

use your offline order editor, set the gp number as a starbase, which has the change spread order, submit your turns and it will work. it did for me.

Im hoping they add the order soon as i was unable to find it also.

David said - bugger this - and fixed it so that a GP will immediately adopt the most beneficial spread in a situation. laugh.gif

For the defender or the attacker in the case of two ground parties?

Or don't both spreads need to be the same?

blink.gif I might be understanding this the wrong way, but does that mean that a GP attacking a starbase would automatically use a specific spread? Im not sure what would be the most beneficial spread - the storm position gets the best factors, but high casualties, etc....so isnt it subjective?

Er forget all this - way to early :-) THought we were talking about Tactics, not Spread. Note to self, go back to bed and forget work!

Crikey - busy morning - It is the case that when a GP is on the receiving end, it will adopt the best spread. When it engages a target, yup, it will adopt the spread of the target. There is nolonger any need to change spread.

The best advice for everyone (unless you work at kjc in which case I still want my turns done happy.gif)

What about when the GP is marching along getting bombed from orbit? Would a dispersed formation be better than packed for casualties?

I'd also prefer to be able to choose the spread of my own GP. Imagine I have an artillery GP. Why on earth would I want it on close or packed. Sometimes you don't want to win (not right away anyway<g>), but just want minimize losses.

If your attacking you don't get the choice anyway (have you ever?) and if your defending then wouldn't it automatically choose a dispersed spread, in this case, as thats your best option?

Trust me, it does not choose dispersed... It chooses the spread that gives you the best Ground Control Factors. I have been trying to figure out how to make my GPs stop huddling together as Close or packed when they are being hammered from the orbital. I am trying what Gandolf suggested over the weekend and will let you know if it worked.
