First Clear all your pending orders (if there are any), that way you know you are starting with a clean slate.
Next, What system are you in? If you are in Yank, I can set up a cheap buy for you so you can practice at my base New Christen (4707). Or simply look at the market report for a base in whatever system you are in right now and just buy anything so you can feel confident that you know the basic orders. This was one of the first problems I had when I started less than a year ago.
Example:
Clear Pending orders
Move to Starbase: 4707
Buy the item
Try doing that simple move before you try anything else.

Yep, this is a good idea. Most aff's are more than happy to help new players get up and running.
