I'd like to have a possibility to tax starbases using an automated routine. Not sure if this would be dead easy or a nightmare to implement and if it's not dead easy then queue it somewhere behing Infrastructure please wink.gif
Suggested new order for both outposts and starbases:

Pay Taxes to [receipient type] [receipient] [parameter] [amount]

During weekly adjustments, the [receipient], which depending on the [receipient type] can be a position (political or other) or an affiliation, will receive an [amount] of stellars times a factor depending on taxation [parameter].
[parameter] is a choice of:
0 - Nothing/Do not pay taxes
1 - Fixed amount
2 - Per complex
3 - Per 1000 stellars paid in wages
4 - Per 1000 stellars of gross income
5 - Per 1000 stellars of positive net income

I really dislike taxation in all its forms, the only thing it will generate is dislike for the taxing authority. and probably a general refusal to pay, which would have to be included in such an addition to the game. mad.gif

Taxation is in the game.
A PD can set the tax rate for the affiliation. It stays at the chosen level until the PD decides to change it.
All affiliation owned assets then pay that rate based on their wage bill.
If you want to exempt someone just let them buy the position from the affiliation.

I wasn't talking about intra-affiliation taxes, although the proposed orders could be used for that as well. I was really aiming for a way to levy a tax on other affiliations similar to what we used to have in BSE. The most obvious use for the order would be to tax installations in claimed territory by the faction claiming the system; another possibility I could imagine would be a starbase paying "taxes" to a mercenary political in exchange for security service.
There is currently no way to automate this as politicals cannot have standing orders. And even with standing orders you could only pay a flat rate weekly, it is hard to auto-generate a taxation based on complexes or money turnover. Which I imagine would be very important aspects.

PS Geoff, the "refusal to pay" would be the non-submitting of a Pay Taxes order (as you are set to don't pay by default) and in the suggestion above you can cancel your tax payment by chosing parameter 0.

You can already transfer stellars on a weekly basis using a starbase standing order - it might not give you some of the more flexible options you suggested, but it does make some kind of regular taxation possible...

From what I understand, the customised orders part of the work towards the infrastructure upgrade will (I think) make it possible to implement a more flexible taxation setup as well

Just as long as there is an option to set it to zero and then gorget it I can live with any new taxation system tongue.gif . Affiliation taxes are agreed with the membership - at least they are in the IMP. General (crss affiliation) taxation just makes other affiliations dislike the taxing authority.

PS I wonder if this suggestion arises from an affiliation with economic problems biggrin.gif

I do like this sugguestion, although I can see me ending up paying taxes, and never recieving them... rolleyes.gif

It could be a very useful tool that will help open up areas of the peripheries to the smaller affs and INDs. Currently, if you want a base on decent garden world, you have a hard-time negotiation ahead of you, but this way, the 'owning' affiliation has more reason to allow a base - earning some extra $$$ on top of any other benefits.

The market/marketing benefits would, I suspect, far outweigh any benefits from taxation. Which is why the IMP currently give the right of veto to resident starbases on a world if someone outside the chartered affiliations wants to start a new one there.

I don't like the taxation idea... it generally favours the one with many systems against the one with few systems.

If those powers doesn't get their balance books checked then I suggest them to reduce the number of troops on their starbases..

That is not really an argument against taxation :-)

I like the idea, but what do you do if the owner refuses to pay the taxes ...

Glad you did though, I hadn't read this thread before!

(Personally I think it's a good idea. There can't be any arguments against having an extra order to facilitate something that people may want to do!)
