Hi,

Am I right in thinking that a platform can carry more armour plates than it needs, i.e. more than two per hull?

The intention would be to keep the full armour rating for longer, because it wouldn't degrade until all the extra plates had been destroyed.

Yes. You can load as much as you want onto a platform as it does not interfere with internal space.

The only drawback is that the hulls will always take damage so it is possible that it will eventually be destroyed even though it has a lot of armour present.

The system actually takes the weighted average of the mass of the armour and protection.
With this in mind if you are going down this road it may be better to use ablative armour as this has a higher thickness.

On another note, you can create spy satellites by putting korondite plates onto platforms. Make sure that you do not make these platforms very large though.
