Can platforms move?

I.e. if they have thrust engines can they leave orbit?

If they have combat engines, can they have a combat speed or a dodge value?

Steve-Law
In other words can they be a ship?

(And a ship with no size limits at that?)

From what I've been told you can pick up a platfom if its small enough to fit in a cargo hold but thats the only way to move them. Makes sense otherwise why bother with researching larger ship techs?

I can confirm that this is possible, but no other way of moving platforms is available

Platforms can only be moved by being picked up in a ship and dumped somewhere else. I do not know the range of control from the starbase though [COLOR=red](Maybe David or Mica could answer this[COLOR=gray] It would seem strange that a starbase could build a platform that control it once it has been placed in another system...

You could use fleets of freighter leaving Platforms in Enemy systems so war fleets can withdraw...

Mica did say in some message I read that it is considered that Platforms do move (which is why you need to scan for them in combat even if you know that a planet has one in orbit), as they can change orbital height and orbit.

There is no range. Subspace communications are sufficient.

This is correct. They move but can not change location without being embarked and disembarked.
They cannot change orbit.

Is there a limit to the amount of hulls a platform can have? Or some kind of limit to the size of platform a platform control can control? Or the amount of platforms a control can operate..?

If you run more that one platform from the same platform control, how do you build the extra platforms?

Only a few questions I know, I'll think of some more latter.. wink.gif

I don't know of a hull limit for platforms.

Every time you build a platform control complex, you get a 10 hull platform in the orbit, hence the use of 10 platform hulls in the construction of the complex. (I don't like this sad.gif - I want to be able to build platform control complexes without making a 10 hull platform).

There is no other way to create a platform. (I don't like this either tongue.gif - I want to be able to take 10 platform hulls somewhere and do a "create platform" order rather than having to embark and disembark an existing platform).
Sam_Toridan
From talking to Mica the ability to build platform controls without extra complexes and various other variations on that theme are on the "to do" list. He also mentioned they were considering needing a certain number of platform controls based on the number of hulls in the platforms. Don't know if its still a serious option but it was being considered.

They cannot change orbit.

Just to confirm then. You can have combat engines in them to give them a dodge value to make them harder to hit.

No combat engines don't work in platforms. Platforms are satellites than can slowly change their course to target anything on the planet or in orbit but can not dodge incoming fire.

So does this mean that you can have the platform in one system and the colony with the control complex in another system?

Yes.
